Call for Papers

Second Call for Papers
We are delighted to announce: Professor Gay McAuley will deliver a keynote address: “Haunted by History: Place in an Ecology of Memory.” The conference will host an interdisciplinary performance exploring the borderlands, and will host a round-table reporting on ‘The View from Here’ – Irish theatre overseas.

Possible topics include:
  • Dynamics of Space and Place
  • Space, Place and Memory
  • The utopian North: the pure North of the imagination
  • Performance of Exile, Emigration, Migration, Immigration
  • Northern Connections: Ulster/Northern Ireland, Canada, Newfoundland, Scotland, New England in performance
  • Performances of identity (Apprentice Boys; Orange Order; Easter parades; performance of paramilitarism and of peace; murals; public memorials) in Northern Ireland and in diaspora
  • Intercultural and Multicultural performance in Northern Ireland
  • Borders, Borderlands and No-Man’s-Lands

Explorations of digital possibilities – such as the recent projections of messages from the Diaspora which formed part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Dublin – are also very welcome.

‘Performance’ includes theatre, dance, spectacle, and all aspects of the performing arts, as well as extra-theatrical activity – such as parades and community gatherings – that foreground ‘the North’.

Publication of Papers: The Irish Theatrical Diaspora Project has a history of success in publishing research emerging from conference proceedings, and the organizers aim to publish a selection of the papers presented.
